Robert Tappan Morris

Advanced Security For Advanced Threats

Back to our content

Robert Tappan Morris created the first computer worm, intended to spread between computers by exploiting vulnerabilities and avoiding infected systems.

A glitch caused it to replicate uncontrollably, infecting over 6,000 computers and leading to one of the earliest Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

Morris was arrested and became the first person prosecuted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

He is now a professor at MIT and co-founder of Y Combinator, a prominent seed funding firm.
