Microsoft has officially announced its intention to phase out NT LAN Manager (NTLM) in Windows 11 by the second half of this year, alongside the introduction of several new security measures aimed at fortifying the popular desktop operating system.
Despite NTLM's inability to support cryptographic methods like AES or SHA-256, the protocol has also proven vulnerable to relay attacks.
This technique has been extensively exploited by the Russia-linked APT28 group through zero-day vulnerabilities in Microsoft Outlook.
